DiaStar Original Skeleton - The Journey Continues
WE COULD MAKE IT, SO WE DID.
When Rado launched the first DiaStar in 1962, the watch world certainly took notice, but it’s fair to say that at first, people didn’t know quite what to make of it. In an era of conventional design, the DiaStar stood out. With its design and materials – along with its durability and extreme resistance – it truly marked a step change for the watch industry and in time, its unusual shape generated a committed legion of followers who have remained loyal to the icon – and the brand – ever since.
In 2022, Rado celebrated the DiaStar’s 60th anniversary with new models by changing the case material from tungsten carbide, which had been such a defining part of the watch, to Rado Ceramos™, whose extraordinary qualities –durability, lightness, and scratch resistance – have already wowed aficionados around the world. This exquisite Ceramos™ also delivers unmatched wearer comfort and an absolutely unique feel (you really do have to feel the difference!). A timepiece that had triggered a design revolution so long ago proved itself to be part of the Rado evolution some six decades later. And the Master of Materials is now proudly launching an update of the yellow-gold coloured DiaStar Original, which has remained wildly popular since the first one was launched in 1972. The new interpretation is the first yellow-gold coloured DiaStar Original to be fitted with a Ceramos™ bezel.
The aesthetic “bang” of this new DiaStar Original Skeleton watch goes beyond the yellow-gold coloured case. It also features Rado’s much-celebrated Art of Skeletonization, which means that the innovative anthracite-grey coated version of the R808 automatic calibre is on full display through the sapphire crystal, both on the front and back of the case. The “Rado” and “DiaStar” logos are creatively printed on the inside of the front crystal. The movement, which has been thoroughly tested in five different positions, is equipped with a Nivachron™ balance hairspring, making it particularly resistant to the influence of the magnetic fields that are increasingly a part of our daily lives. The R808 movement offers a power reserve of 80 hours. The watch is water resistant to 10 bar / 100 metres.
The black dial, offered in sharp contrast to the case and the bezel, features a white printed minute track and flying yellow-gold coloured indexes which, like the hour and minute hands, are coated with white Super-LumiNova®, offering great legibility in all reading conditions. The dial is also enhanced with a gold-coloured Rado anchor symbol on a red background. This DiaStar Original Skeleton is presented in a comfortable polished and brushed yellow-gold coloured PVD coated stainless steel bracelet with a triple fold clasp and Rado’s EasyClip system.
Like the other watches in the updated DiaStar Original collection, this yellow-gold coloured model communicates the radical design DNA of its famous ancestor with a refined shape that is at once muscular and elegantly contoured. With its dramatic skeletonised R808 movement, its heritage case, and its Ceramos™ bezel, it is a breath-taking manifestation of the vision that always drove Rado’s founders: “If we can imagine it, we can make it. And if we can make it, we will.” We could. And we did.
